Mythological History Of Ayurveda
In Hindu mythology, Ayurveda has its great significance. As stated in ancient Hindu scriptures, the roots of Ayurveda are nearly 5000 years old. According to Hindu mythology and Veda’s (ancient Hindu scriptures), Lord Dhanvantri was the physician of all Gods. According to ancient scripture (Puran) that Lord Dhanvantri was the one who came out of the ocean with an elixir pot having nectar of life at the time of sea churning(Sagar Manthan). Later on, all Gods had it and became immortal. Once God Indra ordered Lord Dhanvantri to introduce the healing science of Ayurveda health care to the mortal world “that was earth”. As a result, Lord Dhanvantri brought Ayurveda to earth as the beneficiary for all humankind in natural medicines and healing science.
In another Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma created the science of Ayurveda. Later on, God Brahma himself handed Ayurveda to Lord Dhanvantri. That is why Hindu worship lord Dhanvantri a day before the grand festival of Diwali to take blessings for internal health.
Ayurveda as a Holistic Medical System
As a holistic medical system, Ayurveda believes in treating the root rather than branches. Therefore, treating the cause of the disease is preferred over symptomatic treatment in Ayurveda. As per Ayurveda, the human mind and soul also get sick along with the body. So it’s also important to purify one’s mind and soul with the purification and treatment of the body. And this is the main reason why Indians have more belief in Ayurveda health care than modern medicines.
According to The National Institutes of Health
“Ayurvedic medicine aims to integrate and balance the body, mind, and spirit. This is believed to help prevent illness and promote wellness.” –
Ayurveda… A Science of Life
In the literal meaning, Ayurveda means “Science of life”. According to the Ayurveda medical system, everything on this planet (including our bodies & minds) consists of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Every individual is a unique combination of these five elements and has a distinct “Prakruti” (body nature). There is only one medicinal system, “Ayurveda”, which offers natural herbs, spices, and natural remedies for treatment. As per its holistic approach, Ayurveda believes in the purification and detoxification of the body as the primary treatment. Ayurveda believes that the human body only gets ill when highly intoxicated with harmful stuff and by the imbalance of inner energies.
